Skin ulcers are often caused by a lack of circulation in the area of the body where the ulcer occurs. Individuals can try to improve circulation by increasing activity, wearing compression stockings if the ulcer is on the legs, and elevating the affected area above the heart, suggests WebMD.
People who are at higher risk for skin ulcers include those who are overweight, over the age of 50, and sit or stand for extended periods of time. Regular exercise and a low-sodium diet may help prevent skin ulcers and speed the healing of existing ulcers, according to WebMD.
Doctors sometimes suggest putting wet bandages on the skin ulcers, says Healthline. However, it is not recommended to put any lanolin-based lotions, topical antibacterial lotions or any numbing cream on the ulcers.
