WebMD suggests applying ice to the affected joint for up to half an hour, several times a day and resting the joint to control pain. Other home remedies such as eating cherries and other dark-colored fruits like blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and grapes; taking vitamin C or eating fruit high in vitamin C; and drinking coffee have been shown to lower the high uric acid level in blood that is responsible for gout and may decrease gout symptoms, according to Mayo Clinic.
However, Dr. Weil recommends eliminating coffee from the diet to control gout, minimizing alcohol and avoiding organ meats, sardines and anchovies. Cutting back on fats and high fructose corn syrup may help decrease the incidence of gout, notes Mayo Clinic.
