Some women who suffer from hot flashes claim that dong quai alleviates them, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. It is best taken in combination with other herbs such as chamomile, milk thistle and black cohosh, says WebMD.
The root of the dong quai plant has been used medicinally for centuries in east Asia and is considered so effective in treating problems of the female reproductive system that it is called the "female ginseng," claims the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dong quai is related to celery and grows in the mountains of Japan, Korea and China.
Some women who took black cohosh claim that it was more effective at easing hot flashes than Prozac, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. Scientists have concluded that black cohosh is indeed fairly effective at easing hot flashes.
