Ginseng can have positive results on a diabetic's blood glucose levels, according to Vladamir Vulksan, Ph.D., of the University of Toronto. Ginseng alone does not treat diabetes. The herbal supplement should be combined with other healthy regimens, such as regular exercise, a healthy diet and other necessary medications. The study performed by Vulksan involved type 2 diabetic patients, some of whom took ginseng supplements and some of whom took placebo for 8 weeks; the patients then switched treatments. Those taking ginseng noticed a considerable drop in blood sugar levels.
Several studies have been performed to test the effectiveness of fenugreek in lowering blood glucose levels. In one study, type 1 diabetic patients saw a decrease in blood sugar levels when taking 50mg of fenugreek twice a day.
Richard Anderson, Ph.D., of the United States Department of Agriculture, states that starting with 200 micrograms of chromium three times per day can lead to lower blood sugar levels. According to Anderson, chromium is not a cure all, but taking the healthy dosage does not hurt.
