A recommended diet for patients with kidney failure includes fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats and eggs, starches, fatty foods, snacks, desserts and certain beverages. Patients should avoid foods that are high in salt, potassium and phosphorus, suggests the National Kidney Foundation.
Kidney-friendly fruits and vegetables include apples, strawberries, apricots, broccoli, green beans and carrots, states DaVita. Good sources of protein include baked, grilled or broiled skinless chicken, lean cuts of pork, beef or turkey, egg whites, whole eggs and wild game, such as venison, rabbit and squirrel.
Flour tortillas, grits, oatmeal, white or whole wheat pasta, rye and sourdough are recommended sources of carbohydrates. Approved fats include canola, olive and corn oil, reduced or fat-free mayonnaise, salad dressing and sour cream. Patients on dialysis can also snack on popcorn cakes, low-fat cookies and unsalted pretzel and crackers. Clear sodas, such as orange soda and ginger ale, are also recommended.
