According to The Scott Hamilton CARES Initiative, nutritious foods that are healthy for cancer patients to eat include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and foods rich in protein and omega 3 fatty acids. Low-fat dairy and alternative dairy foods are also good to eat. Beverages cancer patients may drink include water, tea, milk, coffee and 100 percent fruit juices.
The Scott Hamilton CARES Initiative notes that cancer patients should choose a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables. Protein-rich foods include lean meats, such as chicken and turkey. Plant-based protein comes from beans, lentils and nuts. Eggs are another great source of protein. Tuna and salmon are excellent fish choices. Milk, cheese and yogurt are okay, as long as they are low in fat. Patients who cannot tolerate dairy products can choose dairy substitutes that include almond, rice or soy. Patients can eat foods that contain 100 percent whole grain, such as cereals, breads, crackers and pasta. Healthy grains are barley, oats, quinoa and wheat.
To improve the taste of foods during cancer treatment, the Mayo Clinic suggests making liberal use of sauces, such as barbecue sauce, ketchup, mustard and soy sauce. Flavored food extracts, meat marinades, wine and vinegar added during cooking also enhance taste.
