Because blood sugar is a concern with diabetes, it is helpful to stick to as many low glycemic index foods as possible. Sweet potatoes, for example, have a lower glycemic index than regular potatoes while also serving as a rich source of vitamin A and fiber, making them a great food to include in a diabetic diet.
Individuals with diabetes should strive to incorporate foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, recommends the American Diabetes Association. Both whole grains and fish, such as salmon, serve as omega-3 fatty acid sources, although it is best to stay away from fish that is deep-fried or breaded.
