Health concerns associated with Down syndrome include susceptibility to various conditions such as infectious diseases, leukemia, obesity, dementia and heart defects, according to Mayo Clinic. Other health concerns include gastrointestinal blockage, early menopause, seizures, thyroid problems and hearing loss. Some of these conditions become worse with age.
People with Down syndrome have defects in their immune systems and are at a higher risk of suffering infectious diseases. They are more likely to have dementia as well, with signs first appearing around the age of 50, states Mayo Clinic. The possibility of developing Alzheimer’s disease with Down syndrome is also very high. Approximately half of all people with Down syndrome are born with heart problems.
