According to a study published in the July 2012 issue of the Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, drinking alkaline water may have the potential benefit of treating patients with reflux disease. Results of the study show that pH 8.8 alkaline water can inactivate human pepsin, the substance that is responsible for the laryngeal and esophageal damage in patients with reflux disease. Alkaline water also has good hydrochloric acid-buffering capacity, which is beneficial for controlling acid reflux disease.
Many marketers of alkaline water or water ionizers claim that drinking alkaline water is beneficial for correcting the acid imbalance in the human body. Others say that it helps boost metabolism, promote weight loss, delay the aging process and prevent diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes. However, the reality is that these claims are not verified by any research study except the one mentioned above regarding acid reflux.
Registered dietitian, Tanis Fenton, explains that though modern diets are acid producing, they do not make the body acidic. Rather, the urine that is excreted by the body is acidic. That means the body is able to maintain proper body pH and the kidneys are working well to get acid out of the body. Studies regarding the effect of alkaline diets on bone health and cancer prevention have also yielded negative results.
