Off Deep Woods Sportsman II, 3M Ultrathon Insect Repellent and Cutter Backwoods Unscented are three effective insect repellent formulas, according to WebMD. These products are all between 20 and 30 percent DEET.
Insect repellents that contain that amount of DEET are some of the most effective formulas for repelling ticks, notes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These repellents are applied to skin and clothing, but may need to be reapplied every few hours for ongoing protection. They not be applied to the eyes or mouth. Parents should apply them to young children and avoid the child's hands as well.
Permethrin tick repellents are also safe and effective, but they should only be used to treat clothing and other gear, according to the CDC. These products also last longer and can usually withstand a few runs through a washing machine. There is also pretreated outdoor clothing available.
Prevention is also important, suggests Stop Ticks on People. People should perform regular tick checks, especially after hiking or doing other outdoor activity. Tucking pants into boots and tucking in shirts can help deter ticks, since they tend to grab onto their victims' lower body and then crawl upwards to find a place to bite. People with pets should talk to their veterinarians about tick control products that are safe for animals.
