Most cases of nail fungus can be treated at home with over-the-counter antifungal creams and ointments, as well as Vicks VapoRub. In difficult cases, a doctor may prescribe an antifungal pill, medicated nail polish or cream. In rare cases, the nail is surgically removed, according to Mayo Clinic.
Some nail fungus treatments treat the infection slowly. Oral antifungal drugs need to be taken for six to 12 weeks. Although these drugs help a new nail to grow, this can take up to four months. Medicated nail polishes may need to be applied for up to a year before the nail is infection-free, notes Mayo Clinic.
