Some good stool softeners made for women are ducosate, whose brand names include colace and surfak, and lubiprostone, according to WebMD and Mayo Clinic. These medications increase the amount of water in the stool, which makes it easier to pass.
Ducosate is used for occasional constipation and is recommended for women who should not strain when passing stool, such as those who have recently had surgery or suffered a heart attack, explains WebMD.
Lubiprostone is used by women who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, notes Mayo Clinic. It is also prescribed for women who have severe constipation. It is prescribed after other treatments have not worked and has side effects, such as diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain.
