A good review of Provillus can be found on the DailyMed portion of the National Institutes of Health website. Provillus extra-strength for men is a colorless liquid solution of 5 percent minoxidil, which is designed to promote hair growth in men who are gradually losing hair over the entire scalp. It is not intended for women and not recommended for frontal baldness or a receding hairline in men.
Provillus should not be used by women or children under the age of 18, warns DailyMed. It should not be used by men whose hair loss may be due to medications, nutritional deficiencies (such as low iron stores) or diseases like hypothyroidism. This product is not effective for replacing hair lost because of scarring or burns on the scalp or hair loss due to grooming techniques that entail pulling the hair tightly away from the scalp.
DailyMed advises against the use of Provillus by men who are not sure about the cause of their hair loss. Men who have no family history of thinning hair should see their doctor. Provillus does not stimulate hair growth in every patient. Men who achieve results may expect an increase in hair loss temporarily as old hairs are shed and a gradual improvement within two to four months after the first application.
