The Atkins diet focuses on limiting carbohydrates. The diet is divided into four phases. In the first phase, which is called induction, the dieter must eat less than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. This phase lasts for two weeks.
The ongoing weight-loss phase has the dieter adding a 5-gram daily increase in carbohydrate consumption every week. This phase ends when the dieter is 10 pounds away from his goal weight.
The pre-maintenance phase has the dieter adding a 10-gram daily increase in carbohydrate consumption every week. This phase ends when the dieter has reached his goal weight.
If a dieter stops losing weight in the second or third phase, he can cut carbohydrate intake again. The final phase is the lifetime-maintenance phase. The dieter uses the habits from the previous phases to maintain his goal weight and has the option to begin one of the other three phases again if it becomes necessary.
