Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen are often used to treat a herniated disk at home, claims Mayo Clinic. Advil and Motrin IB are examples of ibuprofen, and Aleve is an example of naproxen. In addition to using over-the-counter medications, a person can use ice packs to reduce the inflammation and relieve pain. After a few days of using ice on the neck, a person should switch from ice to gentle heat, which gives comfort and relief.
Too much bed rest should be avoided during the treatment of a herniated disk at home, as it can lead to weak muscles and stiff joints, reports Mayo Clinic. These symptoms can complicate the recovery process. Instead, it is more beneficial for a person to rest for only about 30 minutes, then work or go for a short walk. It is best, however, to avoid any activities that may worsen the pain. If home remedies do not work to treat a herniated disk, a person should contact a doctor for stronger pain medications or muscle relaxers, or to discuss therapy.Learn more about Conditions & Diseases
