Thick ointments such as petroleum jelly, olive oil, shortening and certain skin creams moisten skin to keep irritation and itchiness away, explains WebMD. Individuals should apply moisturizers right after bathing to seal in moisture and place bandages over the slathered skin before bed to help prevent scaling. Ultraviolet light from the sun is also useful in treating psoriasis, but certain psoriasis medications should not be used with sun exposure. Individuals should be in the sun at least three days a week for 20 minutes.
Both heavy smoking and heavy drinking are linked to a greater incidence or severity of psoriasis, states WebMD. Women with psoriasis should not have more than one drink per day, and men should not have more than two per day. Some psoriasis patients find that symptoms improve when abstaining from white flour, sugar or caffeine. When bathing, psoriasis patients should use lukewarm water with salts, ground oatmeal or oils. They should then pat themselves with a towel rather than rubbing themselves dry and bathe no more than once every two days.
