Exercises using an elastic resistance band have been reported to relieve chronic neck pain, according to researchers at Punkaharju Rehabilitation Center in Finland and the Arthritis Foundation. The exercises focus on stretching and strength training in the neck and shoulders.
The researchers compared the effectiveness of strength training against stretching alone or no exercise at all. According to the study, up to three-quarters of the participants reported "considerable or complete" pain relief. Complete instructions for performing the exercises are available from the Arthritis Foundation, which recommends that people consult their physicians or physical therapists before attempting to perform the exercises at home.
