According to WebMD, a healthy breakfast includes fiber, nutrients and protein. A healthy breakfast should contain at least five grams of fiber and five grams of protein.
Protein is essential for breakfast because it can stave off hunger throughout the morning. Examples of healthy proteins that can be incorporated into daily breakfasts include egg whites, low fat dairy products, Canadian bacon, turkey bacon, lean ham, soy milk and soy-based meats. WebMD states that fiber also should be included in a healthy breakfast. Foods such as whole grains contain fiber and also contain many vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals to promote health. Other examples of foods that contain fiber include oatmeal, whole grain cereal, whole wheat bread or English muffin, pancakes or waffles made with whole wheat flour or muffins made with whole wheat flour without much added sugar.
A balanced breakfast may also include a side of mixed fruit or vegetables. WebMD states that many people incorporate vegetables into their breakfast by adding spinach or other greens to daily breakfast smoothies or by adding mixed veggies to egg white omelets. Fruit can be incorporated into breakfast by adding it to a smoothie or eating it on top of oatmeal or whole grain cereal.
