Good diet plans to help with rheumatoid arthritis include the Mediterranean diet, states WebMD, and the Ultimate Arthritis Diet, notes the Arthritis Foundation. Both diets are high in vegetables, fruits and olive oil, foods that lessen the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis by reducing inflammation, according to WebMD.
The traditional Mediterranean diet also includes whole grains and beans, which contain healthy fiber, says WebMD. Salmon and other fish provide omega-3 fatty acids. Instead of dairy products, the diet includes olive oil, which lowers the levels of some chemicals responsible for inflammation. Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables also limit inflammation.
The Ultimate Arthritis Diet differs from the Mediterranean diet in its inclusion of nuts and lack of whole grains. In addition to reducing inflammation, a Mediterranean-style diet also can lower blood pressure, assist with weight loss, and protect against cancer and other chronic conditions, according to the Arthritis Foundation.
