Full Answer

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease, states WebMD. When patients with celiac disease ingest gluten, they develop damage in their small intestines. This damage can lead to nutritional deficiencies and a wide array of symptoms. Gluten sensitivity may also cause similar symptoms as celiac disease, but it is not an autoimmune disease and does not damage the small intestine.
