Atkins markets a wide variety of low-carbohydrate frozen meals ranging from ethnic options such as pasta dishes, chili con carne and stir-fry bowls to traditional American fare, including roasted turkey and pot pies. The product line also offers pizzas, breakfast sandwiches and scrambles.
The Atkins diet restricts consumption of carbohydrates from foods such as bread, pasta and potatoes. In the initial stage of the diet, individuals consume no more than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day and follow strict limitations on allowable foods. Alcohol and caffeine are also prohibited during this phase of the Atkins plan. Meals emphasize consumption of protein sources, including poultry, eggs and red meat. Fats from products such as mayonnaise and butter are also allowed.
When deprived of carbohydrates, the human body begins to burn fat for energy. This process leads to weight reduction. Practitioners of the Atkins diet frequently experience headaches and irritability during early stages of the diet as their bodies adjust to the new regimen. Because of its restriction of carbohydrates, the Atkins diet also triggers the release of ketones, which lend a distinctive smell to the breath. The diet is not recommended for anyone with severe kidney disease, as it can exacerbate it.
