The best foods for women, known as superfoods, include six sources of nutrients that every woman needs, according to WebMD. These include fermented dairy products such as low-fat yogurt, fish that contain omega-3 fatty acids, fiber-rich beans, tomatoes (or other foods containing the nutrient lycopene, such as watermelon, red grapefruit or red navel oranges), milk or orange juice fortified with vitamin D, and berries, which contain anthocyanin, a nutrient that has shown the ability to help with cell repair.
Shape magazine recommends 12 superfoods and suggests Parmesan cheese for its high calcium content, lentils for daily iron, broccoli and red peppers for vitamin C, and spinach for vitamin K, calcium and magnesium. Other nutrient-rich foods that made Shape's superfood list for women include white potatoes, which help with weight control due to their resistant starch, whole-grain pasta for its B vitamins, and mushrooms, which studies have shown may reduce the risk of breast cancer. Shape also recommends that women regularly eat sardines, which decrease inflammation and help prevent heart disease, and avocados for their monounsaturated fat, which may help decrease belly fat. Shape suggests that women regularly consume apples, which are high in the antioxidant quercetin, and eat dark chocolate to control cortisol, a stress hormone that can increase a woman's risk for depression, obesity and heart disease.
