Unsweetened oatmeal may help lower blood sugar levels in diabetics, according to WebMD. Because oatmeal contains soluble fiber, it takes longer to digest than other carbohydrate-containing foods. As a result, blood sugar does not increase as quickly after eating oatmeal as it does after eating other foods with carbohydrates. Strawberries contain sugar, but they also contain fiber and water, so they are more filling than other carbohydrate-containing foods. If a diabetic eats strawberries, he may refrain from eating other carbohydrate-rich foods, making it easier to keep blood sugar under control.
Broccoli and spinach are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber, states WebMD. These non-starchy vegetables are ideal for diabetics because they do not raise blood sugar as much as starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn. Lean meats have a lot of protein in them, so they don't have as much of an effect on blood sugar as foods high in carbohydrates.
