There are multiple factors which increase the risk of developing gallstones, reports WebMD. A family history of gallstones is certainly a factor, and women are roughly twice as likely to develop gallstones than men. Diet is a major contributing factor, however. Overweight and obese individuals have much higher incidences of gallstone formation. In addition, foods low in fiber and high in cholesterol and fats can significantly contribute to gallstone formation. Doctors recommend avoiding highly processed baked goods, red meat, fried foods and whole-fat dairy products. The ingestion of such foods only adds to the size and symptoms of the gallstone.
Foods which should be emphasized when dealing with a gallstone include reduced-fat dairy products, whole grains, lean poultry, and fruits and vegetables, adds WebMD. As of 2015, preliminary evidence had found regular ingestion of peanuts reduces the risk of gallstone formation by 20 percent in women. In addition, several studies have found evidence supporting coffee or alcohol's preventative effects against gallstones when consumed in moderation.
