Flavonoids, which are antioxidants, prevent the growth of H. pylori bacteria that cause gastric ulcers. These foods include garlic, onions, cranberries and apples. Other foods that contain antioxidants include cherries and squash.
Foods such as barley, oats and certain fruits, including pears and prunes, are high in soluble fiber that aid in preventing gastric ulcers, states SFGate. Certain legumes such as kidney beans are also enriched with large amounts of soluble fiber.
Probiotic foods, which are enriched with live bacteria that inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, should be consumed with antibiotics to reduce gastric irritation and heal ulcers, explains SFGate. These foods include certain fermented foods, such as unpasteurized sauerkraut, kimchi and kefir, and certain types of yogurt.
Drinking plain, filtered water instead of coffee or alcohol, and consuming certain beverages such as green tea, may aid in preventing and healing of ulcers, states SFGate.
