Fluids to avoid include water, liquor, sodas, coffee and tea. Renal patients should also avoid foods that melt, such as ice cream and gelatin.
Kidneys also help maintain the proper amounts of potassium in the body and eliminate extra sodium in the urine, says the Medical College of Wisconsin. Renal patients should choose low-potassium foods, such as apples, grapes, pears and cranberries instead of high-potassium foods, such as apricots, mustard, raisins and bran products. Lemon and spices such as oregano and garlic are good alternatives to table salt and bouillon cubes.
A renal patient must avoid eating too much high-protein food, because the waste product known as urea accumulates in the bloodstream as the patient's kidney function starts to decline, notes the Medical College of Wisconsin. Fresh beans and grains are good low-protein foods.
