A diet comprised of mainly plant-based whole foods is recommended for patients who suffer from multiple sclerosis, explains Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis. Fish, which provide amino acids and vitamin B12, can be incorporated as a healthy protein choice, while meats and other sources of saturated fat should be avoided.
As of 2015, there has not been one standardized diet approved for patients with multiple sclerosis, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. A general recommendation is a well-planned, low-fat diet high in fiber and enough vitamin D. There is some evidence that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may also have a positive effect on multiple sclerosis, or MS, patients. Omega-3 fatty acids are obtained from fatty fishes, flaxseed and cod liver oil. Omega-6 is found in safflower and sunflower seed oils.
Foods that are optimal for MS patients include a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and seeds, reports Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis. Saturated fat should be reduced to less than 20 grams per day for optimal health. Patients should avoid processed meat and dairy products such as milk, cream, cheese, butter and ice cream. Egg whites are acceptable, but low-fat milk and yogurt are not. Rice, oat, almond and soy-based milks make good, healthy substitutes for dairy products.
