Those with blocked arteries should avoid trans fats altogether, since these fats raise LDL cholesterol. Trans fats are found in snack foods, fast food, stick margarine, baked goods, refrigerated dough, coffee creamer and other foods.
A diet that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids is recommended for those with heart disease. This includes fish, such as mackerel, tuna and salmon. Two servings of these types of fish weekly is ideal.
Heart disease sufferers should also eat plenty of vegetables and plant foods, including fruits, beans and whole grains. These foods fight heart disease and offer fiber and nutrients.
Oils that are high in polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats are recommended, including olive, peanut and canola oils. Saturated fats found in snack foods, fried foods, desserts, sweets and butter should be avoided. Reading labels to find hidden fats in foods can also be important, since even labels that proclaim zero trans fat may have some trace amounts. These may be hidden under the term "partially hydrogenated oil."
Dietary restrictions should be imposed for those with heart disease, including limited salt. This works to control blood pressure numbers. Cholesterol should also be limited to no more than 300 milligrams daily.
