Some foods known to cause inflammation can include doughnuts, cookies, crackers, fast food, pastries, dairy products and refined grain goods. Foods that contain trans or saturated fats, sugar, monosodium glutamate (MSG) and gluten can trigger different types of inflammation in the body, as noted by the Arthritis Foundation.
Trans fats are found in partially hydrogenated oils used in the manufacture of snack foods and baked goods. These items can include cookies, cakes, potato chips and margarine. Fried foods also contain trans fats, including French fries and fried chicken. Trans fats can lead to systemic inflammation in the body, as stated by the Arthritis Foundation. Additionally, saturated fats found in food products, such as red meats, high-fat dairy products, pizza and cheese, can worsen the symptom of inflammation associated with certain arthritic conditions.
Foods that contain sugar can also cause inflammation. Eating too many foods with this sweetener can cause the release of cytokines in the body, which are inflammatory messengers, as stated by the Huffington Post. Foods that can have high amounts of sugar are fruit juices, desserts and sodas. Refined carbohydrates, such as white rice, certain cereals and bread made from white flour, can also be inflammatory foods.
MMSG, which is a flavoring additive found in Asian dishes and other products, can also cause inflammation. Any bread or other products made with wheat or rye grains contains gluten, which is another substance that can cause inflammation, notes the Huffington Post.
