A 2000 study showed that consuming 25 grams of flaxseed a day for 38 days reduces breast cancer tumor growth as effectively as the drug tamoxifen, according to WebMD. When folic acid is lacking in sufficient amounts, the genetic material in cells is disrupted, leading to reproduction of damaged material that encourages cancer to develop. The phytochemical called lycopene found in tomato products slows the growth of tumors in the breast, lung and uterus as well as reducing the risk of stomach, pancreatic and prostrate cancers. Studies show that raw vegetables may protect against prostate and breast cancers, while cruciferous vegetables that contain detoxifying phytochemicals reduce breast cancer risks in postmenopausal women. A report showed a component found in kale and Brussels sprouts, called sulphoraphane, blocks late-stage cancer development by hindering cancer cell growth.
The American Cancer Society states that the consumption of red meat is linked to colon and prostate cancers, notes WebMD.
