Potassium is found largely in the fluid within cells and makes up a small percent of the body's mineral content. Sodium and potassium regulate the balance of water in the body, and potassium helps to stimulate nerve impulses for muscle contraction. It also supports the health of the skin and helps balance the alkalinity of bodily fluids.
This mineral also helps convert the simple sugar glucose to glycogen, which is the form that can be stored in the liver. Potassium is also necessary for the body to create proteins from amino acids and facilitates enzyme reactions and cell metabolism. It also helps the kidneys remove waste from the body.
Potassium is largely absorbed from the small intestine, and any excess is excreted through urine, perspiration and feces. Excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea and the overuse of diuretics can deplete the body of potassium. Too much potassium in the body can be a symptom of kidney failure.
