For an upset stomach, a diet of bananas, rice, applesauce and toast, known as the BRAT diet, is a common recommendation, explains Health magazine. These foods are bland, easily digestible and can help soothe the stomach. Other good choices include broth, plain crackers, herbal or ginger tea, or coconut water.
The potassium in bananas helps a dehydrated person feel better, as does broth, due to its salt content, notes Health magazine. Rice and applesauce help ease digestion, and rice and toast do not sit for a long time in the stomach or cause acid reflux. Herbal teas, such as chamomile or ginger, soothe the stomach, but peppermint may cause heartburn.
Doctors recommend this diet following vomiting or diarrhea because the foods are low in fiber, making stools firmer. Because the BRAT diet is low in fiber and nutrients, a person should only follow it for 24 to 48 hours.
