Doctors advise patients with kidney problems to maintain a low-phosphorus diet that includes unfortified rice milk, low-fat cream cheese, sherbet and lean meats, according to Mayo Clinic. A person’s phosphorus needs mainly depend on kidney function.
Healthy kidneys remove excess phosphorus to control the blood’s phosphorus level, states Mayo Clinic. People with kidney diseases typically have too much phosphorus in their blood due to malfunctioning kidneys. High phosphorus levels lower the blood’s calcium levels and lead to bone disease.
Adult patients with kidney disease are advised to consume around 800 to 1,000 milligrams of phosphorus daily, says Mayo Clinic. It is important for people with kidney disease to limit consumption of protein-rich foods, as they contain high amounts of phosphorous. Physicians may advise individuals suffering an earlier stage of kidney disease to minimize protein and phosphorus intake in order to reduce waste accumulation in the blood.
Low-phosphorus foods include frozen fruit pops; soups with low-phosphorus ingredients; cereals, pasta, white bread, crackers and other refined grains; and homemade refined dinner rolls, as stated by Mayo Clinic. Green peas, green beans, popcorn and jam are also recommended. Instead of organ meats, patients with kidney problems should choose lean pork, beef, lamb and poultry. Root beer, lemon-lime soda and hard candies are also good for people with kidney disease.
