Some foods that are completely free of carbohydrates include most meats and eggs, most cheeses, certain condiments, olives and certain types of alcohol. Foods such as vegetables and cheeses contain an extremely low amount of carbohydrates and are considered suitable for a low-carbohydrate diet.
Meat, fish and chicken are naturally free of carbohydrates, though they main contain high levels of saturated fat. Certain processed meats like cold cuts and hot dogs have added sugars and may have added carbohydrates as well. Most low-carbohydrate diets include a healthy amount of lean-cut meats, especially chicken and shellfish, and eggs, which contain important vitamins.
Cheeses that do not contain lactose are free of carbohydrates, as well. Cheddar, Parmesan, provolone and cream cheese are just a few of the many types that qualify. In addition, butter and margarine have zero carbohydrates. Condiments like mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard and hot sauce also do not contain carbohydrates.
Beer and many mixed drinks can contain a high level of carbohydrates, but spirits like vodka, rum, gin and whiskey contain none at all. Olives are another common carbohydrate-free food, and they contain valuable monounsaturated fats.
While it is inadvisable to completely eliminate carbohydrates from your diet, studies have shown that low-carbohydrate diets possess health benefits. There is a marked increase in good cholesterol when individuals limit their carbohydrate intake.
