Each food has a glycemic index number. Avoid foods 70 and higher if on a prediabetes eating plan because they are high in carbohydrates, and carbohydrates increase blood sugar, explains Healthline. Foods between 69 and 56 are medium on the index scale, and foods 55 and less are low on the scale.
Foods that are 70 and higher include bagels, pretzels, popcorn, pineapple and melons, according to the American Diabetes Association. Foods in the medium range include brown rice, pita bread and quick oats. Low-index foods include legumes, lentils and sweet potatoes.
