Foods that boost metabolism include avocado, cheese, milk, tempeh, asparagus, legumes, Greek yogurt, tree nuts, edamame, whey protein, spinach, tofu, fish, shellfish, quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, eggs, poultry, pork, hemp seeds, cottage cheese and beef, according to Prevention. Leslie Bonci for Prevention also recommends eating whole fruits, vegetables, brown rice, cereals, coffee, black and green tea, dark chocolate, peppers, cinnamon, ginger, garlic, cloves, mustard and vinegar.
Bonci claims that calories are not all created equal. There is growing evidence to suggest that some foods behave differently within the body than others, and some are believed to react positively with a person's metabolism. Much credit is given to the calorie-burning effect that digestion alone can induce. Bonci explains that chewing food and breaking it down in the intestines burns calories. Foods that are soft and easily swallowed probably have very little fiber content, which means they pass quickly through the digestive tract without requiring much energy from the body to process. An example is choosing to eat applesauce rather than an apple. Caffeine and spicy foods force the metabolism to increase, but both should be consumed in moderation. Green tea contains catechins, a type of antioxidant that has been demonstrated to increase metabolism.
