The culprit of high uric acid levels is the breakdown of the substance purine, which comes from various foods and exists in all of the body’s tissues.
A study published in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases found that individuals who consumed excessive amounts of purines were five times more likely to have a gout attack than others who maintained a low-purine diet, says WebMD. The study revealed that eating foods rich in purine can lead to a gout attack within two days. A person has higher chances of experiencing a gout flareup if she consumes purine from animal food sources compared to plant sources.
Foods with moderate purine levels include fish, chicken, red meat, peas and mushrooms, states WebMD. Asparagus, spinach, cauliflower and lentils also contain moderate amounts of purine. It is crucial to reduce intake of foods with high and moderate purine content to lower the risk of persistent gout attacks.
