According to Medindia, food is necessary for the growth and maintenance of the human body. Apart from that, food serves a physiological function, a psychological function and a social function.

Medindia explains that food serves a physiological purpose by providing calories, which provide the body with the energy it needs to move around and to perform metabolic functions, such as maintaining a heartbeat, homeostasis and brain and organ activity. Food also provides nutrition to keep the body healthy. It serves a psychological function by providing a feeling of satisfaction. When humans eat, they do it not only for the physical benefits but for a sense of relief and happiness they get from consuming something that tastes good. They also consume food in social situations. Food brings people together in times of celebration and sadness. Food promotes a sense of community, whether it is between friends or people of the same heritage.

According to Medical Online, the benefits humans receive from food cannot be replicated by nutritional supplements. The proper foods provide calcium to build and strengthen bones, protein and iron for muscle maintenance and other nutrients that allow the optimal functioning of the body's organs. Regularly consuming "junk foods" loaded with sugar, fats and preservatives and little nutritional value can lead to obesity, heart problems and other health issues.
