WebMD recommends numerous home remedies for sore throats, including rest, increase of fluid intake, a warm saltwater gargle, throat lozenges or hard candy, frozen treats, using a humidifier, warm liquids, steam inhalation and some over-the-counter medications. Bacterial infections, such as strep throat, require a clinical visit.
WebMD states that colds and similar viral conditions usually do not need antibiotic treatment, and some home remedies can be more effective than medication. For the warm salt water gargle, mix 1 teaspoon of salt to an average-size glass of water. Popsicles are an excellent choice for a cold treat. Warm liquids, such as chicken broth or hot tea with honey, are traditional favorites for providing comfort. Pressing a heating pad gently to the throat works similarly. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can provide pain relief as well.
