When a fever is present, many over-the-counter pain relievers help control body temperature, according to WebMD. The best of these include acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen sodium. Most are available over-the-counter at local pharmacies for extra convenience.
According to WebMD, acetaminophen is considered one of the best fever reducers. This drug is the main component in Tylenol as well as a number of other over-the-counter and prescription pain medications.
Care should be taken when consuming alcohol while taking acetaminophen. Medical News Today reports that studies from the American Kidney Foundation and the Mayo Clinic found that even light to moderate consumption of alcohol in combination with over-the-counter pain killers can increase the risk of kidney dysfunction.
