As of 2014, the fastest mile run on foot was 3 minutes, 43.13 seconds. Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj set the mark on July 7, 1999 at Rome's Olympic Stadium. The run broke the previous record of 3 minutes, 44.39 seconds held by Algeria's Noureddine Morceli.
In 1998, the Moroccan set the world record in the 1,500-meter run at 3 minutes, 26.00 seconds. Two months after his record-setting mile, El Guerrouj broke the 2,000-meter world record with a 4 minute, 44.79 second sprint in Berlin. Widely considered the greatest middle-distance runner of all time, El Guerrouj retired from competition following the 2004 Olympics.
