Laxatives, stool softeners and rectal glycerin suppositories are all remedies for constipation, notes WebMD. The level and speed of relief depends on the severity of the constipation.
Stimulant laxatives such as Feen-a-Mint and Ex-Lax speed the stool’s movement by stimulating the intestine, reports WebMD. Osmotic laxatives, including MiraLAX and milk of magnesia, work by drawing water into the intestine, making the stool softer and therefore easier to expel. Colace and other stool softeners also soften the stool to make it easier to pass. Glycerin suppositories draw water into the intestines, usually causing a bowel movement within just a few minutes up to an hour.
