Individuals can achieve a healthy weight range by maintaining energy balance, informs the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute . Energy or calories are taken in through foods and drinks. These daily calories must be balanced by the amount of energy that is spent on physical activity and breathing. Individuals who are obese or overweight can reach a healthy weight range by increasing the amount of physical activity and reducing daily energy intake by 500 calories.
A person’s environment can contribute to his ability to maintain a healthy weight range, adds the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A neighborhood that lacks sidewalks, parks or fitness centers can make it more difficult for individuals to engage in physical activity.
Healthy weight ranges are also influenced by genetics, notes the CDC. For some individuals, genes are directly responsible for their obesity. This occurs in disorders such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. For others, genetic factors increase their predisposition for obesity. Genes do not predict future health, and these effects can be overcome by additional weight control measures, advises the Harvard T.H.
