Most areas in the United States do not have free eye clinics, but there are programs that provide free eye care from participating optometrists through vouchers or other types of payment. The largest of these programs is Vision USA, available from the American Optometric Association.
Other programs, including Medicaid and Medicare, may provide free eye exams. Many states have health funds that offer free eye care as well. For example, California has the California Vision Foundation. A variety of private charities have individual chapters that may provide vision care services; Lions Clubs International is one organization known for work of this kind. Additional help may also be available to senior citizens, infants and people at high risk of glaucoma or blindness. Search online for free eye exams in your area or contact an ophthalmologist or social worker.
