Eucalyptus oil may help with different respiratory ailments, including sinus problems, such as sinus congestion and sinusitis, states Dr. Weil. There are different ways in which to use eucalyptus oil to relieve these types of sinus problems that may be caused by a cold, flu or other underlying condition. However, eucalyptus oil should not be ingested.
A main ingredient in eucalyptus oil is cineole, which has antibacterial properties. This oil is often found in many cold and cough medicinal products. In herbal medicine, fresh eucalyptus leaves are used in gargles for sinusitis, or inflammation of the sinus, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center.
To relive sinus congestion, the use of eucalyptus oil in a steam vapor or as a ointment for the chest may be helpful. A chest rub is prepared by combining about 15 drops of the oil with 1/2 cup of carrier oil, such as almond oil. To use eucalyptus oil in a steam vapor, add 10 drops of oil to 2 cups of steaming water and breath in the vapors, states the University of Maryland Medical Center.
