Entamoeba coli is a protozoan parasite that spreads from one person to another via the fecal-oral route, according to the Medical Chemical Corporation. Usually this happens when a person eats food that has been contaminated with the cysts of the protozoa. Because the protozoan causes no clinical symptoms, it is usually only found when a physician inspects a patient’s stool sample. The protozoan’s presence is usually indicated in a stool sample by the presence of the cyst or the trophozoite stage of the life cycle.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Entamoeba coli is never pathogenic even in patients with compromised immune systems. Several other protozoans are part of the normal intestinal flora of humans and don't cause health problems either. Included among these are Entamoeba dispar, Entamoeba hartmanni, Entamoeba polecki, Endolimax nana, Chilomastix mesnili and Iodamoeba buetschlii. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention contends that such protozoans may live in the human intestine for days, weeks or months.
