An endodontist is a dentist that specializes in root canal treatments and other oral issues that are difficult to diagnose and treat. Endodontists study an additional two or more years after completing dental school, learning and studying different root canal procedures and techniques.
Aside from root canal procedures, endodontists specialize in performing a variety of treatments that include surgery, endodontic retreatment, and diagnosing and treating dental trauma.
A general dentist often refers patients to an endodontist if any pulp (nerves, lymphatic and fibrous tissue) are found to be diseased or injured. Endodontists typically perform an average of 25 root canal procedures weekly, while general dentists treat an average of two root canals every week.
