Emu oil is oil extracted from the fat of an emu, a bird similar to an ostrich, according to WebMD. The oil is used topically and orally in people and animals for various conditions. It is also used in manufacturing.
There is insufficient evidence, as of 2014, that any of the medicinal uses of emu oil are effective, but people use it orally to lower cholesterol, soothe coughs and aid in weight loss, states WebMD. People use it topically to soothe pain and inflammation and heal wounds. It also is used to treat earaches, nosebleeds and various skin conditions from diaper rash and chapped lips to eczema and wrinkles. Veterinarians use emu oil on pets to prevent cracked paws and reduce joint swelling. In industry, emu oil is used to lubricate machinery, to polish wood and leather and for weatherproofing.
