The Lions Club sends most of its donated eyeglasses overseas to impoverished residents of developing countries, as of March 2015. Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center volunteers clean, sort and package donated glasses before shipping them abroad.
The Lions Club recycles both reading and prescription glasses, as well as sunglasses. All styles are welcome. The Lions Club also participates in numerous other projects designed to prevent vision problems. It has established pediatric eye centers that have treated more than 120 million children. In Ethiopia, it distributes millions of doses of azithromycin every year, which helps fight the eye disease trachoma. The Lions Club has also provided funds for the construction of at least 315 eye hospitals.
