Who Is Eligible for CHAMPVA Dental Benefits?

As of 2015, dental benefits under the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs, or CHAMPVA, are available to all active CHAMPVA members. The optional dental insurance does not limit eligibility based on enrollment priority or service-connected disability rating.

CHAMPVA provides health and dental care benefits to spouses, widows, widowers and dependent children of a qualifying sponsor. A qualifying sponsor is one who the government rates as permanently and totally disabled because of a military service-connected disability or someone who held that rating at the time of death. Applicants may also qualify if the sponsor died as a result of a service-connected disability or while on active duty. Additionally, eligible CHAMPVA dependents may not qualify for Department of Defense TRICARE benefits.

Dental benefits are available through Metlife and Delta Dental. Plans vary, but coverage may include preventive, diagnostic and restorative care. Some plans also cover orthodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics. In addition to co-payments, plan enrollees pay fixed monthly premiums for dental insurance.

Current CHAMPVA members may apply for CHAMPVA dental benefits at DeltaDentalVADIP.org or via Metlife.com. Assistance is available by dialing 877-222-8387 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday. Alternatively, members may visit VA.gov for additional information.
